Running for Democratic presidential primary
Joe Biden was a senator from Delaware in the 1990s, and former President Barack Obama’s Vice President. Biden takes credit for his role in crafting the 1994 crime bill. The bill, signed by President Bill Clinton, included a mandatory life sentence policy for people convicted of multiple crimes. Critics blame the crime bill in part for the mass incarceration of Black men in the ’90s, and a reason for our massive system of incarceration today. Biden has since expressed regret for his tough-on-crime past. He’s running on a platform that centers rebuilding and protecting America’s middle class.
